At the Epsom Summer Meeting today the leading event resulted as follows : THE DERBY STAKES. Of £IOO each, with £3OOO added; for entire colts and fillies three years old; colts 9.0, fillies 8.9; about li miles. APRIL THE FIFTH, Mr Tom Walls’ hr c, by Craig an ErinSold Again (Lane) 1 DASTUR, the Aga Khan's b c, by Solario ■— Friar’s Daughter (Beary) * MIRACLE, Earl of Rosebery's b c, by Manna —Brodick Bay (Harry Wragg) 3 The order of favouritism was: Orwell, Miracle, Hesperus, Cockpen, Dastur, April the Fifth, Firdaussi, Portoflno and Wyvern. The Calcutta Sweep on the race closed on Saturday with a total of £150,000, compared with £621,000 last year. Twenty-one started. Cockpen, Bacchus, and Miracle were prominent at the start, after which Portoflno drew ahead and led down the hill from Firdaussi, Miracle, Spenser and Dastur. Portoflno was still in charge at Tattenham Corner, but quarter of a mile from home dropped back beaten, and Daslur forged ahead. April the Fifth came with a strong run over the last furlong, and overhauled Dastur to defeat the latter by a length in a great race. Miracle was a short head away. Royal Dancer was fourth, and Firdaussi fifth. Orwell ran disappointingly. He never endangered the leaders, and finished about ninth. WINNERS OF THE DERBY. Critics agree that Orwell was unable to stay the distanceThe race was an outstanding triumph, and proved the stamina of April the Fifth. The worthy winner breasted his way forward when the others weakened, as only a good, courageous horse could do. The victory was popular with all classes.
