BOYS SACRIFICED.

EMIGRATION SCHEMES. DENOUNCED BY BISHOP. “A great wrong to defenceless lads ’ !s how the Bishop of Montreal has described the Canadian Government’s decision to allow 500 British • boys to be taken to Canada during the coming .season for farm work. The Bishop has made a slashing public attack on the proposal In a letter to the Canadian Government. He says: ■ — “When one has seen hundreds of these boys in the bread line in Montreal during the past year, when one knows that a good number of them have been sent back to England to ■their own families by the generosity of private citizens, to say nothing of those who have been deported by the Government, and when one sees now a large number of these boys depending upon public charity one feels indignant indeed that 500 more should be 'brought out to share the fate of those who have come in the past few years. Dependent Upon Charity. “No doubt some of the boys brought out have been comfortable on farms,” continues the Bishop, “but there is no doubt either that many of those who •have been brought out have left the farms and that they have been drifting from plaoe to place, depending upon the charity of the people.” The Bishop mentions that he read in a Montreal • newspaper that the Federal and Ontario Governments had arranged with certain organisations to bring 200 boys between 14 and IS years of age into Canada during the coming immigration season. He communicated with both Governments and found that the intention is to bring out 500. • The Bishop declares that the boys are “to be offered as sacrifices to keep together immigration organisations of various kinds.”
