THE AUCKLAND RIOTS.
CONSTABLE ASSAULTED. MOTOR-DRIVER CONVICTED. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. In the Police Court yesterday Le) Martinovich, a young motor-driver, denied that he had assaulted a constable during the rioting in the vicinity of the Town Hall on April 14. Constable Jones said that shortly after the commencement of the rioting he saw accused in the front ranks of a hostile crowd in lower Grey’s Avenue. Accused threw a stone or a brick in the direction of the police. The missile struck witness, who gave chase and eventually overtook and arrested accused. When taken to tho central police station accused admitted he had thrown a couple of stones. Counsel: You hit him with your baton? Witness: Yes, once or twice, but not on the head. I could have hit him on the head many times. Martinovich was convicted and remanded for a week for sentence. Renewal of bail was refused.
