MEAT FOR BRITAIN.
EMPIRE monopoly scheme. FOR SUBMISSION TO OTTAWA. REPRISALS FORESHADOWED. United Press Assn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright LONDON, April 28. According to the Daily Herald a scheme has been secretly prepared for submission to the Empire Economic Conference at Ottawa, the ultimate object of which is to create an Empire monopoly in the British meat market by means of tariff preferences. The newspaper says a manifesto signed by representatives of British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian meat interests has been approved by the National Union of Farmers, but has been suspended for the moment owing to the reluctance of certain British interests to put their names to the scheme. It is stated that the scheme includes fresh, frozen and chilled beef, mutton, pork and lamb, bacon, hams and veal. It is suggested that Imports to Britain should be regulated according to the seasonal requirements of the British markets.
The Herald in an editorial article condemns the plan, which, it says, is bound to raise prices and will only lead to reprisals by Argentina and Denmark.
