SEQUEL TO RIOTS.

FIFTY KEN CHARGED. SEVERAL SENT TO GAOL. PROSECUTIONS AT AUCKLAND. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, Thursday. The Police Court was crowded this morning, when nearly fifty men were charged with various offences arising out of the rioting and looting. Many of these men had been remanded In custody. Thq hearing of the charges Is expeoted to take two days.

On the table before the Crown Prosecutor were several Interesting exhibits, comprising a large catapult, several iron bars, and one hollow bar filled with lead, with a leather thong at the end. Three seamen, Harry Pasquall (31), Patrick Gallagher (39) and Michael O’Hara (28), admitted inciting to lawlessness when the riot was at its height. They wore sentenced to three months in gaol. ... , Counsel asked the magistrate to ante-date the sentences, as the men had been waiting in gaol. The Magistrate: No; 1 only wish I could post-date it. .... Reginald Morton (27), electrician, married, with five children, was found with a string of beads, which he said he picked up. The magistrate, Mr Hunt, said if accused was innocent it was his duty to return the heads. A sentence of three months imprisonment was imposed.

Assaulted a Constable.

Oswald Bourheau (51) was convicted of assaulting a constable, and was sentenced to three months' imprisonment. He was said to be one of the founders of the Communist Party. He had resigned last December owing to a disagreement over tactics. He would not deny telling an audience on March 27 that they must fight to overthrow the capitalist with all weapons, constitutional and otherwise. Constable In Serious Condition. George James Silver was charged with inciting lawlessness, assaulting a constable and a detective, and intimidating relief workers. His counsel objected to the police proceeding with the summary charges before the indictable ones, whereupon the Crown Prosecutor said: “ Constable Cook, one of the constables. Silver is alleged to have assaulted, is still in hospital'in a dangerous condition and it is not known whether he will live or die. 'There might he a more serious charge against Silver. The magistrate decided to hear the charge later in the day. Simeon Elari (19), on a charge of inciting lawlessness, ireceived three months’ imprisonment, and for assaulting a constable an extra three months’ imprisonment. He said he had been living with Jim Edwards, a Communist leader.

Threw Half a Brick. John 11. Edwards, who threw half a brick at a constable also received three months’ imprisonment. He had another half brick in his pocket when he was arrested, and told the police that he did not know it was there.
