ISLAND HURRICANE.
DAMAGE IN NEW HEBRIDES
STEAMER ON A REEF.
PASSENGERS AND MAILS LANDED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. (Received pril 28, 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, April 28. Messages from Vila (New Hebrides) state that a cyclone on the nights of Monday and Tuesday last unroofed houses and stores. Lighters were sunk in the Vila Harbour, and trading cutters were driven ashore. Inter-island shipping were forced to shelter. Much damage to plantations resulted. The Burns Philp Company's steamer Malinoa was driven on a reef at the Island of Aoba. The passengers, provisions and mail were landed safelj. Attempts to re-float the vessel have failed. It is an exceptionally treacherous coast. The sea is now calm. The damage done in the northern islands is unknown, but it is anticipated it is severe on the eastern and southern coasts. • Vila is on the sheltered western side, and thus escaped the full force of the hurricane.
