SITUATION IN INDIA.
MRS GANDHI IMPRISONED i GOVERNMENT’S HAND FORCED. WILL.GANDHI BE INTERNED? United Press Assn.—Elec. T4l. Copyright. CALCUTTA, .January 16. Mrs Kasturbhai Gandhi, wife of the Indian Nationalist leader, was convicted at Surat under the Criminal Law Amendment Act, and sentenced to six weeks’ simple imprisonment. It is understood that the Government did not intend to have Mrs Gandhi arrested, but its hands were forced when she travelled among villages in the Bardoli district of Bombay in company with other women leaders, inciting the peasants, to refuse to pay taxes. Notwithstanding the Home Government's denial, rumours persist,in India that Gandhi is likely to be released from gaol and interned in a remote village. The latest report is that Gandhi and other political prisoners are to be sent to Burma, but of this the Government of Burma denies all knowlege.
A Rangoon newspaper says Gandhi is not wanted in Burma, and the Government should protest against the Government thus disposing of undesirables. 1
