Some interesting tennis was produced by tiie first rounds of the Auckland championship tournament yesterday. j. T. Laurenson, of Matamala, tiie singles champion, was successful over K. Ilayr, 6 —2, 9 —7, 6—l. He nearly lost the second set when Ilayr led 5—4, but obtained mastery on his backhand, and clearly demonstrated his superiority in the third set. E. L. Jiartleet, a former singles champion, met with strong opposition in (lie person of W. G.' Watkins, who, however, tired in the latter sets. Bartleet won 4—6, 6—o, 6—l, 6 —2.
