ROTORUA TOURNAMENT. WAIKATO PLAYERS COMPETE. YESTERDAY’S PLAY. Several Waikato players are engaged in the Rotorua tennis tournament. Some of the results of yesterday’s play are as follows: - Championship events: - Ladies singles, second round, Miss M. Beverley beat Miss Moginie, 6 —3, 6 —2; Miss N. Beverley beat Miss Brennan, 6—2, 6—o. Men’s singles, second round, Smith beat Annett, 6l f 6—l; Stevens beat Fabling, G—4, 6 —4; Stedman beat H. Annett, 6—4, 5—6, 6—l; G. Third round: Fabling beat Simpson, 11—8; Howard beat Herrold, 11 —9; Cavaye beat Wilson, 11—6. AUOKLAND TOURNAMENT, LAURENSON IN /FORM. AUCKLAND, Tuesday. Some interesting tennis was produced by tiie first rounds of the Auckland championship tournament yesterday. j. T. Laurenson, of Matamala, tiie singles champion, was successful over K. Ilayr, 6 —2, 9 —7, 6—l. He nearly lost the second set when Ilayr led 5—4, but obtained mastery on his backhand, and clearly demonstrated his superiority in the third set. E. L. Jiartleet, a former singles champion, met with strong opposition in (lie person of W. G.' Watkins, who, however, tired in the latter sets. Bartleet won 4—6, 6—o, 6—l, 6 —2.
