WAGES LEVY.

NURSES' BOARD TAXED. PROTEST BY HOSPITAL BOARD. A protest against the emergency unemployment levy applying to the board allowance of nurses, In addition to the 10 per cent, cut, was made by the Waikato Hospital Board to-day. Mr J. Price (Matamata) said that while domestics In private service were exempted from the operation of the new measure, domestics In the board’s service were not. The speaker pointed out that nurses' duties were in a large measure domestic. He thought an emphatic protest should be made against the levy. Mr W. R. Lowry ((Morrlnsville), did not agree with Mr Price. If the nurses boarded out they would be paid £1 per week extra. The board In such ease would have no option but to deduct the tax. The speaker declared that the financial position had to be faced and all must share the burden. The reason probably why domestics In private service were exempted was that they were more poorly paid than those in public service.
