SHARP EARTHQUAKE.

ALARM IN HAWKE’S BAY. “A TERRIBLE JOLT.” (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WAIPUKURAU, Wednesday. A short, severe earthquake shock was experienced in Waipukurau at 11,45 this morning. It was followed by a quivering tremor. Residents rushed into the streets in alarm. No damage has been reported. Porangahau, on the coast, reports that the district was badly shaken:by “a terrible jolt." Crockery and other movable articles were thrown from the shelves; Minor damage only was done. The settlers were thoroughly frightened. The shock was very severe in the Mangaorapa district. Many chimneys were brought down and there was considerable minor damage.
