STEAMSHIP SERVICE.
DOMINION TO AUSTRALIA. ENTRY OF AMERICAN COMPANY. RESTRICTION ASKED FOR. (Special to Times.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. In the House of Representatives to-day 'Mr P. Fraser (Labour —Wellington Central) expressed the opinion that immediate steps should be taken by the Government to prevent American 'steamers carrying passengers, mail and cargo between intercolonial ports, in the same way as British ships were prohibited from trading between two consecutive United States ports. The Prime Minister, the Right Eon. G. W. Forbes, said the Government was aware of the position, and the situation was being investigated with a view to seeing what action was necessary and desirable. ■Mr J. S. Fletcher (Independent—• Grey Lynn) also urged that the Government should take steps to protect ■local shipping. He complained that the American line would he at an advantage through She huge subsidies received.
