VALUELESS CHEQUE.
alleged false pretences. MAN REMANDED AT HUNTLY. (Special to Times). HUNTLY, Thursday. A prompt piece of work was effected last evening by Mr George Kosoof, son of Mr L. Kosoof, when he located at Ngaruawahia a man who had presented a valueless cheque at his father’s shop in Huntly for £6 5s 6d. The man entered the shop on Monday, and after making some purchases presented the cheque and was given the balanoe of the cheque in -cash. Later it was found that the stranger had procured a blank cheque from another business man In the town, had filled in a fictitious name, and made out the amount as stated, the cheque being drawn on the Bank of New Zealand at Hamilton. As a result of enquiries made from the bank Mr Kosoof notified the police, and as he had some idea of the 'stranger’s whereabouts he set off last evening in hot pursuit.
In the meantime the police had been informed that the theft of an overcoat, cap and gloves had hen committed on Monday evening. The articles were the property of Mr W. G. E. George, Mayor of Huntly. The police were convinced that the person who had presented the cheque was in some way connected with the theft, and last evening -the articles were recovered at Ngaruawahia.
Meanwhile, Mr G. Kosoof located his man and brought him to Huntly in his car, on the pretext that there was something about the cheque that he wanted him to fix up, and he was arrested by the Huntly police. This morning Roderick Ryan appeared at the Huntly Police Court and was charged with obtaining money by false pretences and with the theft. He was remanded until Tuesday.
