COUNCIL & BUTCHERS.
HAMILTON MEAT SUPPLY. DISPUTE DISCUSSED. DR. C. J. REAKES MEETS PARTIES. The dispute between the Hamilton Borough Council and the Hamilton Master Butchers’ Association concerning the Hamilton meat supply, was ventilated yesterday afternoon before Dr. C. J. Reakes, Director-General of Agriculture, at a conference held at the Borough Council Chambers, at which representatives of the Council, Master Butchers’ Association and the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company were present. Details of the dispute have been frequently outlined in the columns of the Times. Although the department regards the dispute as entirely one between the Borough Council and the Butchers’ Association and the Freezing Company, it is necessary for the Minister to give his consent before any alteration of killing charges is made. Dr. Reakes explained that the department was entirely impartial in the matter, but as the Minister had received very strong representations from 'the Master Butchers’ Association on the subject he had withheld his consent to the proposed alterations until both sides had been heard. It was with the object of hearing both sides that he (Dr. Reakes) had come -to Hamilton, and he would make a report to the Minister on his return to Wellington. The conference sat in camera until nearly 6 p.m. The result was not available to the press, but a report will be presented by the borough delegates to the next meeting of the council. Dr. Reakes left to-day for Auckland, where he will further discuss the position with the directors of ■ the Auckland Farmers’ Freezing Company.
