The Discovery’s investigations in .the southern whaling Industry involved widespread researches into the temperature, salinity, and density of the sea water, and the content of phosphate and 'nitrate controlling the growth of microscoplo plants, on which animals and whales subsist. In the course of his studies on the Discovery, Mr Williams Coresby compared areas and seasons in order to ascertain the concentration and migration of whales and the occurence of good and bad whaling years. The Discovery's work, which occupied two summers, covered 2600 miles of the South Georgia whaling grounds. She made thousands of hauls and took thousands of temperatures and water samples.' The Discovery has done much to make navigation safer.
