SECONDARY SCHOOLS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —“ Poor but Honest ” shares With ’another anonymous- correspondent an earnest desire not quite controversially honest, to draw red herrings across the scent. He does not deal with tho real issue—viz. the propriety of Messrs Snell, Sims and Speight in occupying positions on both ' boards. He lias not understood the matter of courtesy involved, much less explained what he means, so I cannot help him there. I did not say that the Education Board had squandered thousands. I said tho Education Department—but I suppose that is near enough for one who finds it necessary to parade his “ honesty.” The squandering of thousands of pounds quite obviously refers to the money wasted in providing accommodation on both sides of Hinemoa Street . for schools whloh need not have been duplicated. As this matter is purely incidental to my first letter, and as I propose, sir, to address you a little later on the general issues of educational policy involved in tho present situation, I do not propose hero to carry the matter further. As to the “ roll figures ” your correspondent knows as well I do that hts question is the merest “ red herring.” Taking his own obvious interpretation , however, ” Poor but Honest ” will observe how greatly his inference of successful competition would aggrevate the impropriety of Messrs Snell, Sims and Speight.—l am, etc. F. A. de la MARE.
