WAIKATO SHOW LAMBS

PRAISE FROM SMITHFIELD. finest seen there. — good advertisement for trade The special consignment of show lambs to Sinithfield from the \Vaikalo Agricultural and Pastoral Association 8 show last year was exhibited shortly after arrival. It was ai rang two prominent Smithfleld Judge 1 Messrs George G.ooclchild and F.® n " nison to be present, together with a prominent retailer, Mr . Pu J ha ™' of home-killed dead stock shown at Smithfleld. , . . - The lambs turned out to be of similar merit and finish to last season which was voted the finest exhibit of lambs seen on Smithfleld market P to the date. The same remarks were heard again and the people best able to judge were satisfied that this year s exhibit was even better. Colonel Dunlop Young, well known to the trade, said he could pick out lambs in the exhiijjt which, in his 30 years’ experience had never been equalled.

Nothing to Compare With Them. The London agents of W. and R. Fletcher, Ltd., in the report of the shipment to the Waikato Agricultural and Pastoral Association, state that they have never seen lambs arrive on Smithfleld so bright, _so perfectly dressed, nor so uniform in quality, and as butchers’ meat, apart from last year’s show from the same source, they had seen nothing to compare with them. ~ . . It was a pity, however, that beautiful as they were to look at all the classes had a sprinkling of lambs that were too heavy for the trade. Taken as. a whole it was clear that those who had drafted the exhibits appreciated fully now Hie requirements ■of Smithfleld, and the majority of the pens had never been excelled as meeting the requirements of Smithfieid. The group competition again created an immense amount of interest on the market.

Waikato in Premier Position.

The report states: “We hope the society will continue to keep this competition in the forefront of its schedule —helped by’ the wonderful workmanship and care wifi Which these lambs are handled at tty? works, the exhibit enables us to on Smithfleld the crowning exhibit of the season. We make bold to say that this exhibit and the wonderful competition in the Black-faced carcases this season put the Waikato Show easily into the premier position as an exhibit of export fat lamljs for New Zealand, and, therefore for any country. We would earnestly request you to have a comprehensive photograph taken next year of the fat lamb show, something we co\ld exhibit here and which could be given publicity. The good work which the society has done in connection with this fat lamb export business deserves wider publicity and the district should get the credit for having such a wonderful competition and everyone in the trade at this end says that there as no other show on Smithfleld to touch it. Fortunately also, they came forward just at the right time to give the new season’s New Zealand lamb a prominent send-off for the New Year trade in Smithfleld.’’
