BRITAIN’S UNEMPLOYED

TIME FOR AN INQUEST. AIOTION CARRIED. United Press Assn.—Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, Feb. 17. Alajor W. E. Elliot, Conservative member for Kelvingrove, Glasgow, speaking on the proposal to increase the borrowing powers under the Unemployment Fund, said the Government was refusing to face facts and was taking the easy course. The time for holding an inquest had come. All; J. J. Lawson, Labour member for Durham, said armchair critics ought to realise that the country was insured not only against starvation but against moral degeneration, crime and social disorder. The amendment to limit the borrowing powers of the fund was lost by 251 votes to 220, and the motion was carried. The Confederation of Employers and the General Council of the Trades Unions have accepted Air AlacDonald’s invitation to send delegates to confer -with him on Thursday and discuss the industrial situation. The Prirhe Alinister will meet the delegations separately. It is understood that the Trades Union Council is greatly critical of the employers’ proposals.
