IN AURIFYEROUS METALS. AT SOUTH ISLAND SOUNDS. OPINIONS OF GEOLOGISTS. (By Telegraph.— Press Association.) INVERCARGILL, Wednesday. A party of geologists, consisting of Professors Benson (Dunedin), Bertrand (Auckland), King (Wellington), ' and Keble (Melbourne), returned from a six weeks’ expedition in the Preservation and Chalky Inlets, West Coast Sounds, by the ketch Scout, bringing a large quantity of specimens for analysis. Professor Keble said: “From my researches I have come to the conclusion that there is untold wealth in auriferous metals in the Sounds, but to west that treasure from Nature the work will have to be carried out under scientific methods. The indications and reefs met with were exactly similar to the gold-bearing area of Australia. In no part of New Zealand is there such a promise of rich results'-being obtained as in the vicinity of Preservation Inlet.” He suggests that a number of men should be employed in making tracks to open' up inaccessible regions.
