ORIENTAL RUGS.
COLOUR EFFECT. Antique Oriental carpels arc usually accepted as tiic standard of excellence for colour and design. But many of the colour effects obtained are duo to accident rather than plan. Some of the bits of wool have faded more than others, some have turned pinker, bluer or yellower with the passing of the years, so that, instead of possessing a flat colour background, as was probably intended by the designer, they have a very beautiful “ stipple ” effect. This same effect can be obtained quite easily by the modern rugmaker at home by purchasing your turkey rug wool for the background in two or three tones of the same shade, and, after cutting the wool, mixing the three together and working into the rug. Equal quantities of blue, red-blue and green-blue look particularly effeetive when worked, and there are, of course, many more variations.
