TOP WEIGHT IN HERRIES MEMORIAL CUP.

Searcher ran useful races in hack company at Rotorua. The Campfire— Seascore gelding was third in the Waimangu Stakes on the iirsl day, while at his next day start he heat all but Laptown in the Electric Handicap. Searcher, who is in T. E. Nash’s slablc at Hunlly, is speedy and he will only require to improve a little in stamina Lo prove harder lo dispose of.

Cruachan’s starts at the Rotorua meeting resulted in a third in the Cup and a second placing'in the President’s Handicap. The King Mark—Straga gelding was noL favoured at all by the running eiLiter day. His laiesl displays were an improvement on his Thames efforts. JL may be decided to transfer Cruachan to hurdle racing, a department in which this member of H. Syme’s leant has had some education and has shaped favourably

Laptown, after running a good race to be fourth in the Hot Springs Handicap at Rotorua on Saturday, improved sufficiently to win the Electric Handicap on Monday. The Lapidary— Marble Town filly, who is raced by her Matamata 'trainer, R, J, Mateer, is both speedy and game and she will win further races.

Lucky Alice had been doing good work at Te Aroha prior to keeping her engagement in the Cup at Rotorua, in which she was installed second favourite. The Lucullus—Miss Alicia mare finished last of the seven runners in Saturday's ten furlong event. Lucky Alice got onto the rails near the turn out of the straight and this did not improve her prospects, although she did not lose material ground. As the result of the mishap referred to Lucky Alice was not able to race on Monday.

Mosque, who was favourite for the Cup at Rotorua was prominently in the issue until the straight was entered. At this point A. Tinker’s mount got hemmed in and horse and rider narrowly averted serious trouble, while the final challenge . was thwarted as the result of the crowding. in the President’s Handicap on the second day Mosque was never hitting out with the freedom shown on Saturday and he ran last of the five runners throughout the mile, although he was finishing on better than any of the opposition. Mosque is engaged in the Cup at Te Aroha with 7.2, an impost which would afford him good prospects if he paraded in his best form.

Clopton was second In the Cup and third in the President’s Handicap, his starts on the respective days at Rotorua. There is nothing particularly dashing about the Tomatin—Lueelle four-year-old’s galloping, but he holds on well. If his rider, E. Ludlow, had not been hemmed in and unable to use the whip on Clopton in the Cun, it was not improbable he would have turned the head defeat by Sir Mond into a victory. Clopton, who previously ran two seconds in the handicap class al the Thames meeting,, is a likely proposition for a middle distance stake round the country.

Tetrachate claimed sufficient support to send the Tea Tray—Volopia gelding out favourite for the Mokoia Handicap on the opening day at Rotorua. Tetrachate was in tiie picture throughout the seven furlongs and SO yards, but he could not do better Ilian third, afler carrying wide at the home turn. He would not have won, tins apart. Tetrachate contested the Farewell Handicap, of similar distance on Monday, but on this occasion be was last home of the five runners.

Red Heckle has been taken up again al Riccarton after a'four moulds spell. He looks well and appears to be sound, but lie will not be hurried. F. Christmas does not intend racing him before the spring. This gelding’s young brother lias been named Convoy. Why the duplication of names has been allowed is hard to understand. A gelding called Convoy won the Wellington Cup some years ago, besides oilier races. lie was not, first past the post in the- Wellington Cup. The winner Gladsome, was disqualified on a technicality in connection with her rider’s license. She was ridden by F. D. Jones, then an apprentice in R. J. Mason's stable at Yaldhurst.

The three-year-old filly Sympathetic, by .Martian from the imported mare, Sweet Charity, is not to be persevered with as a racing proposition. She was trained by .). H. .lefl'erd for .Mr A.-B. Williams, but as she shower! only moderate form her retirement was decided on and she has joined .Mi' I Williams’ oilier mares, under the care of Mr 11. M. Reeves, at Hororata. Stic is a good-looking filly, who should make a grand brood mare. Her two- ' year-old half-sister, Clemency, by Limond, commenced her si ml career j this season, and she has returned to Hororala after being, mated with Hunt- I ing Song. .Mr Williams’ two imported ' mares are also hack at Hororala. Cy- i mene has a line coll by Hunting Song ami is in foal to Chief Ruler, while Sweet Charity is in foal to Might Raid.

COLUMBA. A SMART JUVENILE. Columba, the sister to Eaglet, proved too good for the two-year-olds she met at Rotorua. Columba began promptly each day and showed too much speed for the opposition. In the Arawa Park Stakes on Saturday, Columba shied in the straight and momentarily faltered but her rider got her balanced again quickly and even then she was three-quarters of a length to tho good at the close of the five furlongs. Her winning margin on Monday was a length. Columba Is a smart galloper.

Sir Russell tackled the open sprint grade both days at Rotorua. At his first day start, the Archiestown—Miss, Floss gelding did not reach the firing line. In the Borough Handicap on Monday, Sir Russell put in a very bold challenge over the concluding portion of the six furlongs and was galloping over everything to get the verdict with a length to spare. Sir Russell will be engaged on his home track for the coming meeting at Te Aroha, and he will require to be considered in his racing at that centre.

King March was having his first start for some time when he raced in the Geyser Hack Handicap at Rotorua. The Rossendale—Queen March three-year-old gelding was handy in the early stages but he drifted back over the final portion of the mile and beat only two home of the nine runners. King March, who is in J. T. Jamieson’s stable, is a promising young galloper who will give a better account of himself on a bigger track.

Lord Val was made favourite for Ihe Hot Springs Handicap at Rotorua on Saturday. After losing ground at the start he Mas rushed up to a forward position, but the effort was too much and he dropped back again in the straight to finish fifth. Lord Val had a change of pilots for his engagement in the Electric Handicap on Monday hut he did not do any better this time. The Valkyrian—Sweet Colleen four-year-old was not well behaved at the barrier. He has speed, however, and will do ! better as lime goes on.

Sir Mond struck form at the Rotorua meeting where lie won llie Cup and the President’s Handicap, the leading events of the respective days. He was also in the role of runner-up in the Farewell Handicap on Monday. Botli his victories were secured in attractive fashion. The Serernond — Lute String gelding was produced in excellent order for his recent racing. Now that he has struck form, Sir Mond will require to be considered in more important company before the season runs out.

Valreina, the winner of the Geyser Hack Handicap at Rotorua, beat a fair field on Saturday and returned a useful price. The Valkyrian—lrene Bruce mare took charge early on the mile journey and scored very comfortably by a length. On Monday Valreina contested the Ohinemulu Hack Cup but she was not favoured by the running and failed to reach the money. Valreina is not only speedy hut she slays well and will do further good service for her Matamata owner, Mr W. Egan. She is trained al that centre by R. H. Martin.

In referring to the Taranaki Slakes, a .News writer says:—ln the second best pool of the meeting Lady Quex (£75(5) was a good favourite, with £453i on Hunting Cry and £39Si on Ammon Ra. Ceremony delayed the start, but Mr Vincent effected a wonderful despatch and the held went off in line, Ammon Ra, Lady Onex and Hunting Cry being actually first lo move. At 'the end of a furlong Ceremony. Ammon Ra and Gesture were in front of Lady Qucx (on Hie rails), Hunting Cry and Pagunelli. Hunting Cry made a forward move at the half mile, where Gesture dropped out of the struggle, leaving Ceremony and Ammon Ra clear across the High School bend from Hunting Cry, Lady Quex, Gesture and Paganelli last. When they straightened up iL could lie seen that Ceremony had shot his bolt and Amnion Ra drew out clear lo win with consummate ease by two lengths from Hunting Cr<'. Haganelii finished very fast lo cut Ceremony oul of lliii'd money by a neck, a length and la half behind llunling Cry. Lady j Onex was tiflb and Gesture last. Am- : mon Ra definitely proved himself lo lie Hie champion I wo-year-old of Hie season and llte best weight-for-age sprinter in the Dominion. II is dillicull lo gauge actually how good he is so ridiculously easy was his win. Hunting Cry ran a good race and Paganelli finished on remarkably wdl. Lady Onex had no chance from Hie : half mile. She was securely (rapped ami coining into Hie slnhrht was galloping on Ceremony's heels. i

Ti Tree was assisted to victory in the Mokoia Handicap on the opening day at Rotorua by a run on the rails as the straight was entered. Apart from this, however, Ti Tree finished resolutely and may have won in any case. The Tea Tray—Taimai mare was saddled up in Ihe Farewell Handicap on Monday. She again ran a good race, hut had to be content with third place lo Volimond and Sir Mond. Ti Tree is on the improve all the time and should be hard to beat whenever she is again produced.

Cay Lap was introduced to racing at Ihe Matamata meeting when the Lapidary—Lady Swift gelding finished H close third in the Hinuera Handicap. The three-year-old followed this up with a second in the Waimangu Stakes on the first day at Rotorua while on the second day he scored decisively in I lie Flying Stakes. This form makes oul Die member of li. J. Maleer’s team at Matamata a promising young galloper.

Prolomint go! on the winning list in the Waimangu Stakes on the opening day at Rotorua. Vigorous riding ladies by A. Tinker materially aided the Catmint—Protocol 3-year-old colt in being the leader at the close of the six furlongs. Prolomint was again in the role of favourite when he was paraded for Ihe Eediic Handicap on .Monday, lie was drawn wide oul on Ihe lalest occasion. Getting away somewtial belated Protomint had nothing in his favour throughout the whole trip, lie was finishing . very fast in fourth place at the close of the six furlongs. If he had had anything like a favourable passage, Protomint would again have led the field home. On the roomy track at Te Aroha, Protomint will prove a difficult proposition in his class as he is a promising galloper.
