HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER.
CHRISTCHURCH STANDBY PLANT. ENSURING ADEQUATE SUPPLY (Bv Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. Four powerful Diesel engines, originally designed for the use of German submarines, will be employed as a standby plant for the supply of electric power at Christchurch. The location of the plant has not been decided, but it has been ordered by the Government to ensure an adequate supply during next winter. The engines were designed by German engineers during the war but they had not been installed at the conclusion of the hostilities, and under the terms of peace Germany handed them over to England. Sometime ago three were sent to Auckland for installation at Penrose sub-station. The engines will shortly be shipped to Lyttelton from England. Slight modifications will be necessary before they are placed in use
