Sir, —it, is interesting to note how quickly the manipulators of the bet-ting-machine are adapting themselves to the hardness of the times- The fall in machine receipts has caused the racing clubs much perturbation; they recognise that large money is not to be had in tiie country, and that they need a net with a liner mesh to catch smaller fry. Hence the decision to j inaugurate the machine with the flveshilling ticket. The greater the facili- ! ties the greater the returns. forced to economise, but with the lower priced tickets a larger held of investors will be tapped and the gambling habit will increase and spread amongst those who at present are largely untainted. It is regrettable that the racing clubs are so greedy for gain that they are not concerned about the ramifications of the gambling habitj but are so anxious to secure the uttermost penny from the community for the precution of their so-called sport the prosecution of their so-called sport pursue their victims to the very portals of Hades. —I am, etc., P.O.P,
