Egg custard sauce Is apt to curdle and require much patience and slow cooking. A little cornflour added to the sauce will prevent curdling. Use one small teaspoon of cornflour to one egg and half a pint of milk. Mix the cornflour to a smooth paste with the milk; bring to boiling point, add the beaten egg, and cook for a few minutes longer. Glass screens and the inside ofj windows will look particularly bright if they are first wiped i with a damp washleather, then rubbed until quite dry with a soft rag sprinkled with dry washing blue. For obstinate marks, rub the block of blue itself on the glass. Scratches on the surface of the glass will often disappear after polishing with blue. Care must be taken when there is white or gold paint near not to apply the blue before all moisture is absorbed and to remove any particles with a fine brush. Bread will keep moist 'by wringing out a clean cloth in very cold water and placing it over the bowl or under the lid of the container in which the bread is kept. Bread that has become dry may be freshened by standing it on a plate containing a little water, or milk and water, until the bread has absorbed the liquid. Then put it in a moderate oven to become firm again. Another method of freshening stale bread is to put it on an open shelf in a fairly hot oven, with a basin of water on the shelf beneath. Remove the water after ten minutes, but let the loaf remain for a further five minutes. Charcoal used in filters can be cleansed by scraping and soaking in a weak solution of , permanganate of potash. The inside of the filter should be scrubbed out and any stains removed with the aid of a sliced lemon.
