Left, men working up to their knees in water. Although the huge pump on the left of the photograph is constantly in operation, men employed in this part of the work are never out of the water. The background shows a section of the spillway. In centre, an indication of the size of Hie gear .used in building the dam, this being a shackle of one of the big thirty-five-ton cranes which are in operation. On right, one of the flood-gates. If three motor cars were placed one on top of the other in these huge gates they could be taken through easily. This is one of three for which provision is being made on the Canterbury side of the dam.
