CRICKET SEASON OPENS.

WAIKATO ASSOCIATION’S MATCHES. FIRST ROUNDS OF COMPETITIONS. GOOD SCORES ON TRICKY WICKETS. ? In a burst of sunshine, but with unsatisfactory ground conditions, the cricket eeason opened In Hamilton on Saturday. At Seddon Park Nos. 1 and 2 wickets had been covered with tarpaulin and were In fair condition, but the rains had created some weak spots near the crease. The outfield was very dead. In view of this and the fact that the games were the first of the season, the general standard of batting was good. Hamilton East, last season’s champions, ran up a good first Innings score against Frankton on No. 2 wicket and the latter will have to exert Itself to overhaul at the second strike. Hamilton and Old Boys started a match on No. 1 wicket, the position at stumps making the victor hard to plok. In the Senior B competition High School and Ngaruawahla are In good positions against Old Boys and Hamilton East respectively, while Railway won by default from Frankton. The Junior competition was commenced on Saturday and some Interesting games were played. The details of the games appear below. $ THE TOP SCORERS. t Senior A N. STRIKING FORM. - HAMILTON EAST’B LEAD. MATCH WITH FRANKTON. Hamilton East, last season's champions, m.-de a robust reply Frankton’s llrst innings toc.U of 92. jhe Frank ton batsmen all went cheaply, with .the exception of R. McLean, who placed them all round the wicket for 32. "Slip”’ Griffiths looked as though he would carry his side io three figures, but had to carry ’ Ins bat when Hallen was snapped up by Bishop. The bowling honours were fairly evenly distributed, 1. Johnston notching the best average, with 3 for 13 Hamilton East soon showed that they had lost little c.f r.heir old form. Every effort was exerted by half a dozen bowlers, only Anderson, a new member, meeting with much success. Skeet signalised the passing of the opposition's total by hitting the first boundary and his team were 100 un after a little over an hour’s play. Going played a -splendid innings for 47, meeting every bait methodically and hitting out for four sixes and three fours. Hamilton Last had made 182 for the loss of seven wickets at stumps, a substantial mad, which will be difficult to overtake. Scores: — FRANKTON. —First Innings. \V. Lee, b Badeley A. OLD BOYS. FAIRLY SLOW SCORING. WINGER PROVES DANGEROUS. Hamilton opened its first innings against Old Boys with Pomeroy and Lissette. As a result of the difficult wicket and awkward outfield, scoring was very slow. There was, In fact, nothing of interest for an hour or so until Winger opened his shoulders for a couple of sixes. He attempted a boundary with the next,, which fell short. into Smith’s hands after he' had, made 49 for top-scorer. L'issette was a long time at the wicket and survived a variety of halls for 30. The only other batsman to make a stand was Campbell, who fell a victim to Lumsden. Taylor looked aggressive and kept the fieldsmen busy, but his innings was of short duration.

Winger proved the nemesis of Old Boys, taking five wickets in fairly short time. Lumsden was the only batsman to make a st&nd against him. At stumps Old Boys 1 had made 83 for 6 wickets, leaving the game in an interesting position.
