EARTHQUAKE RELIEF.

POSITION OF FUNDS. STATEMENT BY COMMITTEE. , 1 . (By Telegraph.—Press ' Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. At the last meeting of the Central Earthquake Committee it. was decided to issue a statement of the position of the relief funds, and this was released for publication by Hon.- E. A. Ransom to-day.

The expenditure to 'October 23 was £118,511 for relief purposes, while outstanding commitments, mainly on account of grants not yet paid by the district committees, and also estimated requirements to meet claims pending, total £27,993. The chairman emphasised that the statement issued is not a final statement of the fund, and that the final figures, after review by the Audit Office, will be, published as soon as the work of the district committees is finished.

Subscriptions are £147,041 6s sd; interest on investments made by the Treasury, £l2 16s lOd; interest' on moneys deposited with the Public Trustee, £4563 7s 3d; credits in reduction of expenditure, £l9 19s 9d; total, £151,637 10s 3d. Expenditure of grants to local relief committees was £1000; expenditure by committees on account of refugees, £2632 8s 4d; replacement of clothing and personal effects, £2836 19s 3d; medical treatment of refugees, £577 10s sd; fares of refugees, £lOl4 j 19s lOd; allowance to widows and j dependants of persons killed, £12644 j 2s; allowances to settlers on' account , ■of-loss’ of access to farms, £4542;! restoration of damage to buildings, j £56265 13s 7d; restoration of land and improvements, £32630 15s 9d; replacement of stock and chattels, £4083 16s- 7d;- administration expenses, £283 Is 13d. Outstanding commitments and contingency liabilities are: —‘Purchase money for annuity proposals not completed, subject to adjustment on proof of age, £500; grant on account of partial dependency on deceased son, £180; grants on account of property damage, etc., not yet paid, £13813 9s | 3d;, allowances and account of loss of access to farms, estimate £5000,; contingency payments by district committees, estimate. £1000; amount re-! quired to meet claims pending and also claims from churches and other institutions, estimate £7500; balance,! £5132 14s.
