ATHLETICS.

C. E. GORDON’S EFFORTS

SOME BRILLIANT PERFORMANCES

One of the outstanding athletes in this country has been C. E. S. Gordon, the Oxford high jumper, who has some brilliant performances to his credit (says an English writer, in referring to the recent performances of overseas athletes at Home). His best jumps have been 6ft. lin., when he won the event at the triangular contest; 6ft 2in., for the A.A.A. in the match against Cambridge, and —the bc'st jump of his career—6ft 3Ain., for Oxford against the American Universities. Conies, one of the finest nailers of die day, has done most of his running in this country, but he was horn in India, and ran for the Dominion Students in the triangular contest. In die southern championships in .Tune Cornes, running for Oxford, set up a new record for the Oxford track when he won in 4min 17sec —one of the best miles ever done in this country. And he is probably not yet at his best! Of- the other dominions men who have accomplished .good performances this season H. Gonin, the South African sprinter, and .T. P. Wallace, who can putt the weight 43ft. and throw the discus 127 ft., are perhaps the outstanding..
