SWIMMING.
MATAMATA DISTRICT CLUB ELECTION OF OFFICERS. At the first annual meeting of the Matamata District Swimming Club Mr J. Buchanan presided over a small attendance. . . The report stated that owing to the lateness in the season of the foimation of the Club there was only time for one carnival, which was muo.i enjoyed by competitors and the public. Special credit was due to Mr J. Amundsen for his- very efficient handicapping, and his abilities were manifested 'by the close finishes at the carnival. The thanks of the Club were also due to Messrs Read Bios., Auckland, for a silver cup, which was allotted to the 50yds championship and was won by N. Morrln, of Matamata; also to the owners of the Opal Baths for attention given to the 'Club. The Club had 29 financial members, and a credit balance of £6 12s on the year's working.' , Mr G. D. Richardson, of Hamilton, wrote offering his services as an instructor. The secretary was directed to write asking what the charge would be for attendance on two days a month, Mr Riohardson to coach children in the daytime and adults at night. The chairman and secretary were authorised to interview the committees of both schools when a reply is received from Air Richardson. Mr W. Faulkner intimated that G. Bridson, the Now, Zealand champion, would swim at Matamata during this season.
Officers were elected as under: Patron, Mr J. W. Anderson; president, Mr J. Buchanan; vice-presidents, Messrs 11. Brisco, J. E. Cummings, J. Corbett, W. Spinley, D. N. Hay, L. W. Barkman, S. Ellery, H. Sutherland, sem\, J. Pond, G. Read, W. Walker and Dr. Palmer; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. F. Faulkner; assistant ..secretary, Mr J. E, Robinson; committee, Messrs Spinley, Brisco, Higgins, McDonald and Robinson; club captain and selector, Mr W. F. Faulkner; handicapper, Mr J. Amundsen; auditor, Mr L. W. Barkman; delegates to South Auckland Centre, Messrs W. F. Faulkner, J. E. Robinson and J. S. Smales. The rules of the Morrinsville Club were adopted with a few slight alterations. The subscriptions are to be 2s 6d for ladies and men, juniors under 16, 6d, and school children under 16 free. The boundary of the club is to be a 14-mile radius from Matamata. !
The secretary was instructed to write to the South Auckland Centre pointing out that the members believed the 50 yards back-stroke championship allotted to Matamata would not prove much of a draw. The club was only starting, and a more attractive race would be a boon to it. Morrinsville had been given two championships; if it could be arranged for them to take the back-stroke race and give the 50 yards ladies’ championship to Matamata it would assist the local club to a very material extent. If this could not be done it was decided to ask for a 100 yards ladies’ championship. Messrs Buchanan and Faulkner were appointed to ask the owners of the baths for a reduction in the price of .admission to the baths for members of the club during the season. The present charge came rather hard on a swimmer who trained consistently.
