WAR DEBTS AND BUTTER.
(To the. Editor.) Sir,—l disagree entirely with the point of view expressed by Mr William Boyd, of Matangi'.' I consider the letter of Messrs Leonard and Son -was an admirable summing up of the present position. If Mr Boyd \Vill refer to your issue on Monday, he will find you have set out three admirably clear reasons for the present difference in price between Danish and New Zealand butter in the Homeland, the two most important being the heavy stocks in London of last season’s unsold butter on a market already depressed, and the operation of the Paterson -scheme in Australia. The effect of this artificial regulation of prices in Australia (under which every pound .of butter exported receives a bounty of 3d) is enabling the Australians to undercut New Zealand factories all the time.' There are many besides myself who consider that, in view of the present' trend of affairs in Australia, it will do this country no good to be linked up with the Australians, and I heartily commend the efforts of those who are objecting so strongly to the adjective “Australasian” to denote both Australia and New Zealand. Lastly let me say that -if Mr Boyd will make further inquiry as to the companies who are holding up last season’s New Zealand butter in London, and the quantities at present held, he will, get an unpleasant surprise. He praises the co-operative methods of the Danes, and he should therefore bear in mind that the Danes meet the market every week, and refuse to carry over stocks. I am, etc., —- A. H. PARISH. Hairlni, October 10, 1930.
