In opening an Anglican bazaar in Blenheim recently the Ven. Archdeacon Kimberley took the opportunity to refer to the attitude of the church towards certain methods of raising monev. He explained that he did so because of the following statement in the Marlborough Express a few days b e f ore - What ab'out a church bazaar or sale of work? Why, one of the ■'first things vou are asked to do on entering the door is to buy a ticket for a cushion raffle or something of that sort What is the difference in principle’ between that and running consultations such as I suggest ? “The church in this diocese,”-said the archdeacon “has made a pronouncement on the subject. lam sometimes asked whether I object to this or that method of raising money. It.is not a question of the archdeacon’s opinion. It rests upon a decision of synod—the parliament of the. diocese—which consists of bishops, clergy and laity. Synod has passed a resolution placing on record its condemnation of all forms of gambling, and disapproval of the raising of funds for church purposes by railing or any such questionable means A resolution of symod is as binding as is an, act of synod. The members of the Nativity Guild are a fine band of sensible workers. lam sure they desire to be loyal to and uphold the law or the church.” There were no raffles at the bazaar.
