CANOE CLUB.

SPORTS MEETING ARRANGED. AN ATTRACTIVE PROGRAMME. The newly-elected committee of the Hamilton Canoe Club held its first meeting to frame rules for the club, and after the business had been completed the arrangements for the forthcoming season were discussed. A preliminary meeting is to be held at the Island, which is some distance up the river from the traffic bridge, on Sunday, NovemL%- 2. A programme of ten events has been drawn up, and will include invitation races for ladies. The committee hope that there'■.will'be many competitors in these races. A ladies’ dressing-room will be provided at a nearby residence All competitors will meet at' the traffic bridge and will proceed together to the scene of the sports. Four novelty events have been arranged, the senior and junior canoe fights, and senior and 'junior duck chase. These should provide plenty of amusement and excitement. In the canoe fight four competitors, two in each canoe, participate. One in each canoe is armed with a paddle lance, and it is his aim to capsize his opponent, the paddlers all the time endeavouring to manoeuvre their craft into commanding positions. The classing of canoes, and the programme of events, will be made known lo members of the club during the forthcoming week, and, excepting the novelty and ladies’ events, entries will be received by the secretary, Mr R. Hill, Knox Street. The committee stress the fact that no unflnancial members will be eligible to compete, and ask that all subscriptions, together with the small entry fees, be paid as soon as possible to the treasurer.

It has been reported to the committee that there are many canoes in various stages of construction in Hamilton and within the next few weeks the town will doubtless boast quite a fleet of these popular light craft. , 5
