UNEMPLOYED.
CONDITIONS IN AMERICA. RATIONING OF WORK. The present unemployed situation in the United States of America is the worst ever experienced in that country according to a letter received in Hamilton yesterday from Negaunee, Michigan. The writer -says: “It is terrible here and the place is.full of unemployed—no matter where you go it is the sameThe mines here are working five days a week and are not shipping any ore and I am sure f do not know what they will do through the coming winter. Nearly everywhere else all over the country places are working only three or four days a week. . .-. has been home nearly six weeks and not a day’s work to be found anywhere. It looks as if he will be home all the winter, but we will not starve while I have work. There were 1900 of them working where he was in Chicago and they laid off all except 75, so you can see how things are all over here.
. . . has been working part of the summer but none of the employees have. been working more than halftime as there are so many out of work that they have to do that to give all the married men a chance. It is rumoured that Ford in Detroit is closing down tight. Thinks are terrible in the big cities and there are thousands of families starving.”
