MORRINSVILLE.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEET. IMPORTANT MATTERS DISCUSSEDAt the fortnightly meeting of the Morrinsville Borough Council, the Mayor (Mr MaoPherson), presided. The British Empire Cancer Campaign Society requested a donation. A donation of £5 5s was granted. Mr H. H. Wright, leasee of the recreation ground reserve, asked that water be laid on. for stock,.as at present there was no wholesome water available and stock were suffering. The request was granted.' The Morrinsville District Friendly Societies request to have the date of their permission to use the Recreation ground for their sports-meeting altered, so as not to clash with the Hamilton race meeting was : The Morrinsville Fire Brigade wrote that the fire bell in its present position was not satisfactory. At a recent fire, many of the brigade did not hear the bell "and they suggested a new stand 50 feet high, preferably of metal. The matter was referred to the Works Committee. A copy of Draft Motor Regulations received from the Commissioner of Transport was referred to the engineer to report upon. The director of town planning wrote that the council’s suggestion as to boundaries would be carefully considered. Engineer’s Report. The engineer’s report stated that the wet weather had delayed work very much. A start had been made to extend the width of bitumen on the Thames Street-Hamilton Road, and if possible complete the work before the holiday traffic, as a great saving in maintenance would be effected. Fire plugs: A local reidsent had recently had the misfortune to trip on one of the cast iron hydrant covers on the Moorehouse foot bath. The report recommended that all the hydrants and valve covers be set in a block of concrete.- The work in the reserves had been hampered by the wet weather and would have to be held over until the grounds are dry. Paths on the river bank had been formed and a crossing made and it would be necessary to have gates or styles erected. The matter of fire plugs in footpath was referred to the Works Committee and the rest of the report was adopted. Family Needs Assistance. Councillor Barker brought up a case of a family in the borough being in extreme distress and sadly wanted assistance. The Mayor replied that if councillors knew of any such cases and would bring them before himself or the town clerk, they would at once make enquiries, and he felt sure the Hospital Board would do what it could to help. The unemployment question was a difficult one to deal with, but he was glad that there was not a large number of unemployed in Morrinsville. Most of those who had come before him were men passing through the town from other districts. Engineer’s Services. The Mayor brought up the question
of the engineer’s sendees being leased to Messrs Gooseman and Company. The matter, had been discussed at a previous meeting of the council and terms arranged, but as Messrs Gooseman did not get the contract they had in view the agreement was not availed of. Now they had a contract and wanted the engineer’s services and might also want some of fhe borough plant. He moved that Gooseman and Company be advised that the services of the engineer could be allotted to them on a half-time basis, up to the end of the financial year. After a lengthy discussion the motion was agreed to on the condition that the engineer’s -services' shall at all times be available in case of emergency and that plant be returned in good order. Councillor Reason said that great inconvenience was being caused by tradespeople unloading, cases on the pavement. It was resolved that offender's be notified that they must not do this.
Councillor Stringer brought up the question of the grave of probbaly the first white man buried in Morrinsville. The land was being built on, and he thought the body should be removed to the cemetary or one of the church properties. Some years ago permission had been obtained for its removal, but nothing had been done. It was -suggested that the Anglican Church should move in the matter, but no definite steps were taken.
The question of valuations was dealt with in committee.
