BECKETT’S SUSPENSIONS.
LEGISLATORS DISSATISFIED. FURTHER PENALTY DEMANDED. United Press A3sn. —Elec. Tel. Copyright. LONDON, July 18. The Daily Mail says the members of the House of Commons are pressing for a penalty in addition to five days’ suspension already passed on Mr Beckett. The consultative committee, of the Labour Party will discuss the matter on Tuesday. Mr Beckett (Labour member for Peckham, Camberwell), whilst acting as teller in a division for the suspension of Mr A. Fenner Brockway for defiance of the standing orders, seized the mace from the table and shouting, “Mr Speaker, it’s a damned disgrace,” made for an exit. He was circumvented and the mace restored. Upon the Prime Minister’s initiative Mr Beckett was suspended until July 25, the vote being 324 to 4.
