THE INITIAL SITTING.I! . . OFFICERS APPOINTEID. .FIRST READING OF BILLS. The first sitting of the second ses-s. sion of the Second Synod of the Waikato Diccese took place in the Alexandra Hall yesterday afternoon, the Vicar-General, Archdeacon G. G. Bell, /i presiding. The following appointments were made:—Clerical secretary, Canon Kayll; lay secretary, Mr A. N. de L. Willis: chairman of committees, Mr F. Harris; deputy chairman, Mr D. Hay; clerk of committees, Rev. Weadon; committee on sales of land, Messrs T. G. Hirst, Hay, W. F. Kent,-Johnston • and 11. C. M. Norris; committee on canons, the Archeacon of Waikato, Rev. R. L. Connolly and Messrs F. A. Swarbrick, H. M. Hammond, .T. C„ Fookes and K. S. Caldwell; committee on parochial returns, Revs. G. T. Beale and R. L. Connolly and Mr T. G. Hirst. Further apologies for absence were received from Mr H. G. Corbett pOtorohanga) and Mr F. Copestake (Fitzroy). The appointment of the committee on accounts was delayed until later in the session. Morning Sittings. The president explained that It had been customary to hold informal conferences for laymen and clergymen during synod week but owing to the absence of the Bishop these might not be necessary. The Dean suggested that a clerical conference should be held during the session. It was decided that Synod sit during the mornings and that; the meeting times be: 10 a.m. to 12.30 p.m., 2.30' p.m. to 5.30 p.m., and 1.30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Parish Status. A petition was introduced by Mr T. G. Fookes praying that the parochial district of Holy Trinity, Stratford, be constituted a parish. Mr H. A. Swarbrick introduced a petition praying that the parochial district of St. John’s, Te Awamutu, he constituted a’ parish. The petjtions were granted subject to certain conditions in conformity with the statutes. First readings of bills providing for the constitution as parishes of Holy Trinity, Stratford, and St. John’s, Te Awamutu, were taken. Bills providing for the amendment of various statutes were also read for the first time. Notices of Motion were then taken, discussion on the motion relating to the Maori Mission, introduced by Archdeacon H. Raiti (reported elsewhere) occupying most of the afternoon. - {. Missionary Activities. An address on missionary work was given by Rev. F. G. Long, of Wellington, secretary of the New Zealand Board of Missions. He mentioned that last year the diocese gave £747 for missions, an amount which had • been increased bv'£li this year. It was • gratifying to record that 14 parishes had given an increased amount this year., Hamilton and New Plymouth, the largest parishes, had supported them loyally. Twelve parishes showed slight decreases and a few showed larger decreases due to special circumstances. He added that he was very thankful to the' diocese for its continued steady sflpport. There were three aims on which the Board of Missions concentrated —information, ( organisation, and inspiration. The speaker concluded by expressing hopes , for future support- For the last few years the quota for New Zealand had been £IB,OOO, and it was possible this would be raised this year. He asked them to face this prospective increase with courage and determination. Mr Douglas Hay, a member of the Missions Board, congratulated Mr Long on his -achievement. Mr Long was a business man as well as a clergyman—and that was no reflection on anybody else. (Laughter.) In fact Mr Long was a clever business man and his objects deserved every support. A motion of appreciation to Mr Long for his address was ‘ carried amid acclamation. , Standing Committee. The following nominations were received for Standing Committee: —■ Clergy, Archdeacons Bell, Gavin and Raiti, the Dean, Canons Gillespie and Strong, Revs. Connolly, Weadon, Turner, Boyt, Beale, Bush-King and Fussell; laity, Messrs Hammond, Fookes, Swarbrick, Harris, Wynyard, Hirst, Hay, Corbett, Bruce, Seton, KentJohnston, Willis, Lockhead, Seddon r Hills and Caldwell. The election will be held this evening. Mr D. Hay moved’that the Waikato Trust Board; be empowered to dispose of Archdeacon Cowie’s late residence and the chaplain’s residence at HamAfter a discussion the question was referred to the committee on the sale of hnds.
