UNIVERSITY SENATE.
MEETING AT WELLINGTON. (By Telegraph. —Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Friday. The committee appointed by the University Senate to report- on the Taranaki request for bursaries to enable Taranaki students to pursue their studies at Massey College, recommends that the .Senate -report to the Minister that it is in favour of an alteration in the Act to make provision for the establishment of agricultural bursaries from the Taranaki scholarships fund, but in view of the fact this endowment was originally a general University endowment, it is of opinion that the bursaries ought not to be confined to Taranaki students, and that the executive committee be authorised to prepare a statement for the Minister, and, if necessary approach him by means of a deputation. A favourable report from the committee was submitted to the Senate, recommending that the University he empowered to confer degrees in theology. The ’ committee appointed to consider the question of establishing chairs of agriculture at Canterbury Agricultural College recommended that the Senate approve of two chairs —agriculture and agricultural botany —with a further recommendation of Messrs R. E. Alexander and F. W. Hilgendorf as professors. The recommendations were adopted. A reply that careful consideration would be given to their requests was made to a deputation from the Secondary Schools’ Association which waited on the Senate in regard to the marking of matriculation papers.
