WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

MEETING AT MATAMATA. The usual monthly meeting was held on Tuesday last in St. Andrew’s Hall at 2.30 p.m., Mrs L. Ryan presiding. Interest in the institute is well maintained as shown by the regular attendance. The president welcomed back Mrs Barry, a vice-pre-sident, who has been away for four months. One new member was elected, Mrs M. A. Barton. Reports of the recent conference were given by the delegates. A very interesting demonstration was given by Mrs Flower. Two finished lampshades were exhibited, and the making of such illustrated. The binding of the wire, stretching of materials, stitching, and beading were all shown, with an estimate of cost. Mrs Flower was warmly thanked for her demonstration. During the afternoon tea was served by Mesdames Barkman, Bluck, Callahan and O’Hara. The guest of the afternoon was Miss Sara Stacpole, who had delighted a Matamata audience with her singing at Mr John Dunn’s performance. Miss Stacpole sang several times, and was enthusiastically applauded.

In order to help the funds of the local rest room, members brought calces, biscuits and recipes to be sold, the result being a donation of £2 Is being given to the treasurer, • this money t,o go into the general fund. All present agreed that this meeting was one of the happiest that had been held. The singing of the National Anthem brought the afternoon to a close.
