A NEW SCIENCE

TRANSPORTATION ENGINEERING. Mr J. Coates, transportation engineer, has arrived at the plant of General Motors New Zealand Limited, and his services are available to all business men who have commercial hauling problems upon which they desire expert advice. The position of transportation engineer is comparatively new to the automotive industry. It had been created to meet the definite need for guidance in the purchase and operation of motor trucks and buses. The transportation engineer is equipped to advise in the scientific- application of chassis and bodies to meet the exact requirements of various ■ services so they will give the most satisfactory operation at the lowest possible operating cost. Specifically the transportation engineer is trained to survey a given operation and determine, first, whether automotive haulage is the-most economical; second, what kind of equipment- should lie purchased; third, the most economical method of operating this equipment. The services of Ibis expert in this territory will be extended to all firms with transportation problems, whether' they are operators of one small truck or bus of a hundred. The engineer's job is not primarily to sell General Motors’ automotive products, but rather the general idea of transportation. It is hoped that those interested in commercial transportation ventures will immediately avail themselves of the free offer of Mr Coates’ services in analysing their problems and prescribing remedies.
