HORA HORA NOTES.

On the Farm. On the farms in the district haymaking has been in progress until quite recently. Farmers are now looking anxiously for sufficient rain to stimulate the autumn growth of grass for the winter. Some crops of turnips are good, but others are in need of moisture. Although the dry spell seems to have broken the rainfall since the beginning of the month till Friday morning was only .4 of an inch as registered by the school rain gauge. A well-known farm, that of Mr J. A. H. Beil, has recently changed hands.. The new owner is Mr M. Finlay, late of Puketaha, whose farm Mr Bell has taken over. Mr M. Finlay has a son in the district, Mr A. S. Finlay. Road Work. Road work is much in evidence, and is now in the vicinity of the school. Heavy motor-lorries and speed waggons ply to and fro, and the road is being improved and treated to a generous thickness of gravel in preparation for a coating of bitumen next year. The School. The school year which ends shortly has been a memoarble one. During the year the school has been shifted to a better site, has been re-built and enlarged, and is now a more imposing edifice, consisting of two up-to-date classrooms, teachers’ room, and corridor. Belonging to the school are seven acres of land, which have been completely encircled with rabbit-proof netting. Lawsonians have been planted all round the children’s area, and have taken well. An area at one end has

been planted in pinus radiata trees, which are doing well, and another area in Californian redwoods and gums. A few years should witness a surprising transformation. Much labour has been done voluntarily by the residents of the district under the leadership of Mr 5. H. Judd, chairman of the School Committee, and further improvements are contemplated. A teacher’s residence has also been built. Sunday School.

An undenominational Sunday School has lately been started with 24 children on the roll. It is held on Sunday mornings, at 10 o’clock, in the school, and is being well-attended..
