MORRINSVILLE.
MEETING OF COUNCIL.
IMPORTANT BUSINESS. The Mayor, Mr W. McPherson, presided at the regular meeting of the Morrinsville Borough Council, and the following councillors were present: Messrs Reason, Morrice, Duncan, and Stringer. The borough engineer, Mr Brench, was also in attendance. The Valuer-General wrote that seven applications had been received for new valuations. I 1 he Commissioner of Taxes called attention to the necessity of furnishing returns of land and income. The town clerk, Hamilton, stated that the basis of allocation for heavy traffic fees, as agreed upon last year, had been adopted for 1930-31. The v Morrinsville Fire Brigade requested an explanation as to why the council refused its recent request for a donation towards the cost of sending a delegate to the Fire Conference, and al&o asked that the by-law relating to chimney fires be enforced. Mr F. R. Collins wrote accepting the position of inspector of hawkers and itinerant traders. Town Planning. The chairman of the Town Planning Board advised that a public inquiry will be held by the Town Planning Board in the Borough Council Chambers, Hamilton, on Thursday, May 8. The purpose of the inquiry is to obtain data for town and regional planning, and it was requested that Morrinsvillo be represented.
Mrs McPherson asked for permission to hold a street-stall for the sale of poppies on Thursday, April 17. —The request w r as granted.
In reply to the fire brigade’s letter, the clerk was instructed to inform the brigade that owing to so many demands on its funds the council could not entertain them all, and that in future the brigade must make its requests for assistance in the annual statement, and also that the by-laws relating to chimney fires would be strictly enforced. The Morrinsville Hockey Club applied for the use of the hockey ground for the ensuing season, and requested t'hat the ground be rolled and the grass cut.—The council agreed to their requests. H. G. A. Hewlett’s application for a taxi-cab license was granted, the inspector’s report being favourable. Dangerous goods licenses were granted to Messrs P. Petry, E. C. Day Ltd., Jackson and Ensor and H. Sanders. Building permits were granted to F. Pike and S. G. Snell. Building Returns. The town clerk submitted the following comparative statement of building returns for the last four years:— 1927: New buildings 11, value £6984; alterations and additions, 21, value £1205. 1928: 13, £9363; 27, £2995. 1929: 11, £11,217; 20, £l2ll. 1930: 24, £17,819; 28, £2643. Messrs Grayson Bros.’ request to he granted a lease of a portion of the watershed at a nominal rental for three years was granted, the rental to he 2s 6d per acre. Finance Committee’s Report. The Finance Committee’s report, recommending accounts amounting to £l6B 3s 2d be passed for payment was adopted. The bank balance district fund is in credit £BO2 14s sd; sewage connections, debit £lsl 13s 7d. The request ’of the town clerk for leave of absence on Wednesday and Thursday, April 16 and 17, was granted.
