MATAMATA COUNTY.

MEETING OF COUNCIL.

THE MONTH’S BUSINESS. The monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council was held at Tirau on Friday, when there were present Crs Anderson (chairman), Bruce, Cox, Dee, Allen, Moir, Morris, Nickle, and Wilson. Messrs Fitzgerald (engineer), and Barton (clerk), were also in attendance. Before commencing business Cr. Anderson drew the attention of the ■Council to the sudden death of Mr John McCaw. Mr McCaw had been a member of the Council for eight years, and also a member of the old Piako Council, and the Hospital Board. They had not always seen eye to eye but the speaker had always considered the deceased a man amongst men. He asked the members to stand as a mark of sympathy with the relatives. Review of Main Highways. The Main Highways Board notified that it proposed to make its annual review of the highways during the next few months. Cr Anderson stated that a tour of the whole district had been made by the No. 2 council recently and he believed good work had been done. Personally he knew the districts probably better than most of the members, but in one of the places unknown to him he got an eye-opener. Money was being spent without justification and there was not sufficient traffic to warrant.it. The only road asked for in the Matamata County was five or six miles to make the connection on White’s road. Cr. Dee gave the credit for the favourable condition of the Matamata Main Highways to a great extent to the Council’s own engineer. ReserYO for Doer. The Minister of Internal Affairs acknowledges receipt of a protest from the Council against the conversion of the Tapui block into a game reserve. He advised that he noted the representations and as the Minister of Lands had correspondence on the matter it had been referred to him for his consideration. Town Planning. The Minister of Internal Affairs informed the Council that arrangements had been made by the Toyvn planning Board to hold a public enquiry at Hamilton on May S, for the purpose of determining the boundaries of the region comprising the Borough of Hamilton and surrounding districts. The Council was also notified of a meeting on similar lines to be held at Tauranga on May 12, and was asked to appoint representatives to attend these, meetings.—Cr Anderson, the engineer and such members of the ’Council and staff as can make it convenient, were appointed to attend the conference at Hamilton. A Boy-proof Watch. The A-A.A. wrote stating that in view of the published, report that it is the intention of the Piako County Council to communicate with all counties criticising the association’s legal defence department, it desired to furnish particulars of the case .which the A.A.A. defended, which gave rise to the Piako County’s complaint. A number of Te Aroha members of the Association bad been prosecuted for dangerous driving, and the method adonted of testing the speedometer used to check the speed of defendant cars was crude, and the watch used was a 5s boy-proof watch. This left the Automobile Association no alternative but to contest a case and the Court decided the test was not sufficient. The Association did not favour dangerous driving, but the courts had expressed doubts as to whether councils were entitled to allege dangerous driving when the object was to prevent deterioration of county roads. The Association wished to assure County Councils that its policy was to uphold all reasonable legislation. Maungatautari Deviation. Lewis and Dallimore, Cambridge, advised that this deviation had now been consented to by the Commissioner of Crown Lands and enclosed plan for the council’s seal to be , attached. —The necessary resolution was passed and the seal attached. Bayley’s Road. Messrs Lewis and Dallimore forwarded duplicate agreements in regard to Bayley’s Boad and asking for the execution by the Council. —The seal of the Council w r as attached.

Sub-Dlvlslon Plan. Messrs Vivian and Carr submitted a sub-division plan, which meant the cutting-off of a residential site from Stanley’s property on the Waharoa Road near Matamata and this was approved. Finance and Works Committee. The following recommendations by the Works Committee were adopted: Shear's offer of a Fordson Wehr grader at £6OO was accepted; tenders by C. W. St. Clair for contracts 139 and 140 at 2s 11J and 2s 5Jd per yard respectively were accepted; that the use of motor-lorries be prohibited under Regulations 9 of the motor lorry regulations of 1927 on certain specified roads form May 1 to October 31, except under special permit. Lichfield Stone Quarry. The Council did not agree to the proposed reduction of the composition for extraordinary traffic as suggested by Mr Guiilard’s solicitors or to the provision that it be obliged to metal To Wbetu Road on Guillard supplying the metal. Gr W. S- Wilson asked for leave of absence as he intended to take a trip to England and this was granted.
