CHAMBER OF COMMERCE

MATAMATA BODY. MEETING OF COUNCIL. The monthly meeting of the Council of the Matamata Chamber of Commerce was held on Wednesday evening, Mr B. C. Taylor presiding. The chairman stated, that he wished to remove a wrong impression, which had apparently got abroad, that the chamber in its efforts on behalf of sub-division was pushing particular properties under the notice of the Government. This was not so; the chamber made no distinction as long as the object of sub-division was aimed at. The chamber was not acting as a land agent but, realising that more settlers would mean a great deal to Matamata and the district was simply drawing the Government’s attention to local properties which in its opinion were eminently suitable for subdivision if the price were right. Mr Schofield reported that he had interviewed the lion. Mr .Stallworthy; when the latter visited Matamata in February, on the matter of sub-divi-sion, and the latter intimated that he would go into the question on his return to Wellington.

Mr Bell emphasised the care to be taken by the chamber not to lend itself to undue boosting of any property at a particular price. Replies received to applications for assistance in regard to the chamber’s proposal to issue a booklet setting out the potentialities of Matamata and the suitability of the district for closer settlement, were not very encouraging. Mr Ilecrdcgen explained the experience of the Pukekohe Cmarnber of Commerce in issuing a booklet and the success attained, and Messrs lieerdegen and Griffiths wore appointed a sub-committee to gather data and report to the next meeting of the council.

An estimate of the cost of baths was received from Mr Carr, and the Morrinsville Borough Council forwarded a return of receipts and expenditure in connection with its baths for a period of years—Messrs Stevens and Flower were appointed to go thoroughly into the matter and report at the May meeting. A letter from Mr J. Buchanan, chairman of the Town Board intimated that lie intended to call a meeting in April to discuss ways and means of raising funds to provide a rest-room in Matamata —Messrs Taylor, Griffiths and Schofield were appointed to represent the chamber. It was decided to hold monthly meetings of the- future.
