HIGH SCHOOL HOSTEL
PROTEST AGAINST THE DELAY. OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION MOVES. The committee of the Hamilton High School Old Boys’ Association met last evening, the president. Mr Tompkins occupying the chair. A letter was received from the Mt. Albert Grammar School Old Boys’ Association requesting a date for a cricket match with the Old Boys, but the secretary was asked to reply regretting that no date was available. The Boys’ Hostel. In opening the question of the delayed hostel plans, Mr Tompkins said that.the Board of Governors approved the plans in November last, and they were handed on to the Education Board's architect for specifications. The Board of Governors had been in constant communication with Wellington, and were practically at Hie end of their tether. If the specifications are delayed much longer, lie added, the serious aspect of the hostel not being ready for the commencement of next school year would have to be faced, and he moved that a telegram be sent to the Minister of Education strenuously protesting against the delay. It seemed absurd, ihe speaker concluded, that the specifications should take three months to prepare when the money had been advocated and the plans approved and, as far as was known, with no obstacles in the way. In seconding the motion, .Mr 0. Speight said that the Board of Governors had been continually communicating with the Department with regard to the delay, but had received no satisfaction. It was unanimously decided to send the following telegram to the Minister of Education: — “The executive of my association emphatically protest against the intolerable delay in bringing forward the specifications for the School Hostel, and earnestly request you to expedite same, especially in view of the fact that unless the hostel building be commenced at once same will be incomplete. for the commencement of the next school year.” Quota For Swimming Baths. The means of raising the Old Boys' quota for £IOO for the High School baths was discussed at length, and alter various schemes and ideas were suggested, it was decided to send circulars to the members of the association, asking for donations. Mr Tompkins said that in view of the huge success of the Paddy's Market, the Old Boys, in conjunction with the Old Girls, held in the school grounds, when they were raisingmoney for the War Memorial it would be advisable to conduct another Paddy’s Market. The secretary was instructed to write to the Old Girls’ Association asking them if they would toe able to give their assistance. It was decided also that a meeting of the Old Boys' and Old Girls’ Committee and others interested in the erection of the swimming baths toe convened at an early date, and a subcommittee be set up from that meeting to arrange a Paddy’s Market. Tim chairman announced that the association's blazers are available for financial members at Varney’s. Badges are not attached, as great difficulty has been experienced in obtaining a suitable badge, tout a design has now been arranged, and the badges will be procurable shortly.
