GIANT RADISHES
PRODUCT OF WAIKATO. NEARLY FOOT IN .fflMte'lißß. Something novel in radishes was brought into the reporters’ room of the Waikato Times to-day. “What do you think this is?” asked the Horotiu farmer who produced them. Several guesses were made, the bulk of opinion holding to turnips o- swedes. It was difficult to believe that such huge examples of root crops could really he radishes. One measured 11 Jin. in .•»* «ir and was 6£in. long. The root extended another ll*in. It weighed lib soz. There was no mistaking the vegetable which, when applied to the nostrils, gave forth the typical “radishy” smell. The seed was planted about three months ago in ordinary Waikato soil and in this time has grown to remarkable dimensions.
Originally the seeds came from America and are known as the black winter radish.
The radishes were quite edible, though more peppery than usual.
