SAMOAN AFFAIRS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —The developments in Samoa have aroused Interest not only in the Dominion 'but throughout the world. The honour of New Zealand is at stake in this matter, and it behoves the authorities to bestir themselves and end a state of affairs which can only be described as a reproach. I think there is much common sense in the comment of your correspondent “Mars.” The velvet-glove regime is in many cases an excellent thing; in others it is often conducive to the preservation of peace to let it be known that iit covers a mailed fist. No one would advocate harshness in dealing with a primitive people, unless it is demonstrated beyond cavil that harshness is the only language to which they will respond.—l am, etc., K.E.R.
