HAMILTON BOROUGH.

LAST COUNCIL MEETING. RIVER PATH EXTENSION. HEALTH OFFICER PERTURBED. The last meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council this year was held last evening, the Mayor, Mr J. R. Fow, presiding. Also present were Crs. B. H. Andrews, C. Lafferty, S. Y. Tyler, W. Bourne, F. W. Luxford, A. J. Denz, R. Cobbe, D. D. Wilson, J. E. Tidd, F. H. Glapham, F. J. Farrell, G. J. W. Barton, and Messrs W. L. Waddell (town -clerk), R. Worley (engineer), and I. Webster (electrical engineer). The secretary of the Hamilton Beautifying Society wrote ascertaining if the council would consider the extension of the River Path on the western side -of the river from the Motor Camp in HiHsboro’ Terrace, past the pumping station, • to Graham's Estate. He expressed the view that the extension would effect an immense improvement and would be much used by the public, adding that the society was continually receiving requests to extend the path. The matter was referred to the engineer for report.

Unhealthy Premises,. Dr. J. Boyd, medical officer of health, advised that Senior Inspector Armour, in company with Inspector Lewis of the borough, visited a number of i’ood premises in Hamilton on December 3 and the conditions found in a number of these places were far from satisfactory. lie understood that the inspector was making an inspection of all the s foodsellers’ premises in the district in view of the annual registration and he trusted conditions would be improved before registration was granted. —The letter was received. Gr. LaiTerly remarked that the council was in an invidious position a® the borough inspectors report on premises always had to be referred to the health inspector.

Forthcoming Regatta. Permission to erect the usual barricades in Grantham Street on tiie occasion of the regatta, January 29, and to charge Is admission to the river bank was granted the Hamilton Regatta and Carnival Committee. Other concessions were also granted. Railway > Footbridge. In reply to the council’s recent request the district engineer of railways advised that the footway of the railway bridge would be repaired shortly. The footpaths at the approaches did net need top-dressing at the present.—The letter was received. Rugby Union Request. The secretary of the Hamilton Rugby Union wrote asking if any portion of Hayes’ Paddock, Hamilton East, was available for Rugby football and if so on what terms the coun-

on would allow the Union the trss of .two playing areas.—The matter was referred to the General Purposes Committee. Baths Caretaker. Tho Hamilton Ladies’ Swimming Club advised that at a combined meeting of the Hamilton swimming clubs it was decided to ask the council to appoint Mr C. D. Richardson as baths’ superintendent. It was considered that an opportunity to have a carotaker able to coach and fully quaiifled in swimming and life-saving, should not be missed. The Old Boys’ Amateur Swimming Club forwarded a letter’ on similar lines and suggested that as the present caretaker’ was a tradesman he could be given another form of employment with the council. The Mayor said it was unfortunate that the matter had come forward at the present stage. The council had given Mr Richardson every facility to coach in the batiis and no fault could he found with the present caretaker. Crs Tyler and Denz were in favour of employing Mr Richardson provided the present caretaker was not dismissed. The correspondence was received. Adopted Recommendations. The following recommendations of the General Purposes Committeo were adopted:— “That the council offer to supply the Railway Department with gas at the rate of 7/1 net per thousand for quantities exceeding 40,000 cubic feet per month, but that if the department can arrange to take their requirements between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., the price be reduced to 6/8 net per thousand while the quantity exceeds 40,000 cubic feet per month. “That in connection with proposed amendments to the motor vehicle and motor lorry regulations it be suggested to the Department that the provision for paying heavy traffic fees quarterly should not apply to any vehicle in classes A, B, and C. “That Mr E. J. Tabor be re-ap-pointed dog registrar at tiie same remuneration as previously. “That the fees for registration be fixed at 10s per dog except where the Act stipulates a lower figure. “That the Mayor act on behalf of the council in connection with Ihc welcome to the British farmers due here next February. “That the letter from the Goldberg Advertising Agency regarding the advertising campaign for electrical supply authorities be received.
