BEER—AND CRICKET.
A STRANGE REPORT. A talk on the advertising of tourist resorts had concluded at the Rotary Club at Wellington when Mr B. Teagle took the opportunity to acquaint members with a peculiar piece of publicity New Zealand had obtained In the United States. He said that when he was in the States recently he scanned the newspapers dally for news of New Zealand. On one occasion he found an item, which read as follows; — Beer Battle. Wellington, New Zealand. Two native villages decided to have cricket games for a prize of 100 kegs of beer. The teams were composed of 400 to a side. The games lasted three months, at the end of which time whole families were in danger of starvation because the members neglected their homes. The games recently ended in a free-for-all fight. The ‘‘news item" aroused loud laughter from members.
