BACON COMPANY GUARANTORS.

(To the Editor.) Sir, —I have read in your paper on numerous occasions suggestions from many of our leading men that something should be done to recoup Mr Barugh and two of his co-directors for a very large sum which they have lost In an endeavour to assist their fellowfarmers. Mr Barugh’s retirement from the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company has brought the matter to my mind, and it seems to me an opportune time for that large body 'of farmers who wish to show their appreciation of his lifelong service to the farmers of this district to be given the opportunity to do so. Although I have at times not been able to see eye to oye with Mr Barugh, there can be no two opinions regarding his past services; and although there are no doubt many new farmers about whom one cannot expect to show a keen interest, there are a host of others who know the facts and will consider it a privilege to be allowed to join in. If any well-known body of men would take the matter in hand and head the list themselves there would be scarcely any prominent farming man or institution that would wish to stand out. I am not one who thinks that farmers arc called upon to support everyone who signs a guarantee for a farming company, but circumstances alter cases, and most of the old hands at any rate know that if Mr Barugh has signed one guarantee for farmers lie has signed 20 for business companies, dairy companies, and freezing companies. It is only necessary to call attention to the Auckland Freezing Company and the Farmers’ Auctioneering Company, two of the biggest and best farmers’ institutions in New Zealand. In any case, Mr Joseph Barugh gave his time and lent his hand in the early stages without any thought of personal gain. I write this because it seems to me it Jj a case of everybody being willing to do his share with no one to make a start.—l am, etc., E. GOODWIN. Ciaudelands, Oct. 10.
