PHENOMENAL GALE
RAGED OVER BRITAIN. MUCH DAMAGE RESULTS. TEMPESTUOUS SEAS. (Oillcial Wireless.) RUGBY, Oct. 7. A gale raged over a great part of Britain at the week-end and damage is reported from many districts. The crews of the Dungeness and Swanage lifeboats eacli rescued two men. The Weymouth lifeboatmen were also called out. A boy was killed by lightning in Fifesliirc. The River Avon burst its banks and flooded a row of cottages. This rendered 25 people homeless. Great seas were driven by the gale against the harbour and sea walls at Darlington. Small craft in the harbour were damaged. Seaside resorts on the south coast suffered considerable damage. Wind with a velocity of 77 miles an hour was registered at Falmouth and in many other parts of the country. At Straleane the gale was accomipanied by torrential rains and the streets were flooded. In North Tyrone nd Donegal roads and lowlying ground were flooded and three bridges were swept away. At many towns in the south-west of England in 24 hours half-an-inch of rain was recorded.
