WOMEN TEACHERS.
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. SEVERAL QUESTIONS DISCUSSED. NEW SYSTEM OF GRADING. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Monday. A deputation of the Women Teachers’ Association met Hon. H. Atmore (Minister of Education) 'to-day. The speakers dealt especially with the principle of differentiation between male and female teachers. Mr Atmore said a new system of grading which had been effective elsewhere was under consideration, and he hoped it would remove a lot of the present difficulties regarding salaries.
Regarding women head teacherships the Department had not a great deal of power. He thought the payment of salaries according to efficiency was quite a legitimate aim, and he was prepared to do what he could. He did not think he could agree to the request that there should be no discrimination between married and single women in the matter of appointments. There was a growing feeling against allowing a woman with a husband at work to compete in the educational labour market.
